here are a series of extracted single-panels from early 1940's colored ink on wax paper bubble gum comics, originally wrapped around a small piece of dubble bubble gum. most of the comics feature pud, the dubble bubble ad character, who can be seen in some of these wearing a red striped shirt. each panel shown is, in reality, much smaller than a postage stamp, and insanely difficult to read without a magnifying glass. i love the out of register printing, and the written descriptions of sounds like pow and mooo, as well as the phooo and the splug images which look like they might have been illustrations for jarry's ubu roi. of course, these pre-date lichtenstein's comic panel paintings and the batman tv show's graphics by 20+ years, and yes the images are sound effects for some incredibly dumb yet totally hilarious laugh out loud old school gags.

I like splug the best. They make me think of some of Steven Millhauser's stories.

I love these cartoons made up of dots... It's a neat way to prevent very uncool pixelation. The "sounds" don't quite reach onomatopoeia though: I didn't know an ax going through made a "ZAP!" sound. I interpret it more as: "crrckkk"
