sheepshanks, hitches, and larksheads...

welcome to the columbian knot chart...no date but probably 1920's... a large fold out brochure for the columbian rope company who clearly does make rope suitable "for every cordage required"... there's not much i can add to these images other than i wish i had made them myself... some major visual poetry going on here... the text alone could stand alongside anything in cage's 'an anthology' or emmett williams 'anthology of concrete poetry'

... sheepshank, bowline with a digit, crown on wall, manger, killick, rolling hitch, crabber, shamrock, back-handed sailors, stoppered larkshead, cat's paw, carrick bend, turk's cap...

the flea market was very kind to me on sunday, so i will be sharing all week.

I like the hangman's noose prominently featured. If this was printed today, that would not be advertised.

I am working on a display piece with this very article! (I found your entry while Googling for info about it.) I have an original brochure and its copyright says "1925, Columbian Rope Co, Auburn NY" in case you were curious.
